As animal lovers and care givers, Summit Pet Services is devoted to delivering pets to their new homes. Some of our clients are already experienced pet parents, but many of our clients are first-time pet parents. Because of this, we have some recommendations for new pet parents as they prepare and adjust to their new fur baby.

  • Re-homing and transport are very stressful events for all pets.  Please remember that regardless of the care Summit Pet Services have given them, they will still be stressed when they arrive, so please be very patient with them.  It will take them time to adjust to their new surroundings, and until they feel secure, they may try to hide, not eat or take treats, or have accidents. Give them space and let them interact with you on their terms and schedule.  Within a few days, they should be bonded to you and demonstrating their true personalities.

  • Most breeders are responsible and have provided great care to their animals.  However, we recommend that a new pet is checked out by a veterinarian as soon as possible - ideally within a day or two of arriving in a new home.  Also, many states require animals either be registered and/or microchipped.

  • If you choose to feed your pet a different food than was provided, transition the food very gradually over a period of several days to prevent tummy distress.

  • If you already have pets or small children in the home, do not leave new pets unattended with older pets or small children until everyone has adjusted.  We recommend separating new pets from existing pets whenever pet parents are away from the home.

  • All pets love human food and treats.  Please check one of the many online lists of human foods that are toxic or poisonous to pets.  Do not give pets human medications without consulting a veterinary first.

  • Also, please check the list of plans and other household items that are toxic and poisonous to pets. There are numerous online resources and poison control help lines specifically for animals.

  • If your pet is demonstrating unusual behavior, please contact your veterinarian and/or breeder. Different breeds of animals have different personalities and quirks that may take some adjustment. Your veterinarian and/or breeder will know if the animal is in distress or sick and needs urgent professional care.

  • Animals are much like children and need structure and training.  Never scold or hit a pet to discipline. There are many free online resources on positive reinforcement training.  An animal that is not properly exercised and trained can become destructive.  A well-trained pet is a happy pet!

  • If for some reason, you need to re-home your pet, please contact the breeder first to let them know. Most breeders will try to assist you in re-homing your pet, and some will let you return the pet to them. Please never surrender your pet to someone you don't know, to an animal shelter, or abandon them.  If the breeder or your veterinarian can't help you, there are many animal rescue organizations that will help you safely re-home a pet that isn't a fit for your family.

  • Also, thousands of pets are euthanized every day.  Please help control the animal population by considering spaying or neutering your pet.

Thank you for letting us transport your pet.  We hope that you will have many happy years together filled with love and laughter!
